Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation is proud to announce that marketing and events expert, Susan Finlay, and one of the top investment advisors in the region, Fraser Sutherland, have recently joined our board of directors.

QCH holds a special place in both their hearts for many reasons, including the safe delivery of their respective three kids. As well, there’s been cancer treatment, emergency care, diagnostic imaging and seniors’ care for friends and loved ones over the years.

“The hospital has certainly been key in taking care of my family,” said Fraser, who leads the Sutherland Investment Group at CIBC Wood Gundy. “On top of that, I grew up in a household where my dad was a physician and my mom was a nurse. I saw how much time and effort they gave, not only to their core roles but also within the community, in supporting hospitals. I wanted to emulate that and do what I can for what I think is really one of the best hospitals in Ottawa and a true community hospital.”

Susan’s connection to QCH goes back to her childhood, when her mother worked there in the Health Records department. She fondly associates QCH with her mom, who sadly passed away in 2007.

“QCH was pretty dear to her and it’s always been a part of our family,” said Susan, who, as the youngest of six kids, grew up in Bells Corners. She continues to reside not far from QCH. “We’ve had several visits there over the years with, you know, kids falling out of trees and whatnot.”

Her volunteer roles include work with several Women’s Shelters in Ottawa, Syrian refugee support, past President of the Qualicum Community Association, past Chair of school council and coaching youth girls soccer.

Fraser originally hails from Peterborough but moved to Ottawa after finishing his degree at Queen’s University. “I fell in love with Ottawa,” said the resident of Westboro. “It’s like a big little city.”

His volunteer work has included roles with organizations supporting minor hockey, at-risk youth, cancer care and research. As well, he’s coached for the Ottawa Shooting Stars Basketball Association, Ottawa West Little League and the Nepean High School junior girls basketball team.

In his new role with the QCH Foundation board, Fraser will be serving on the finance committee. Susan will be using her connections to boost awareness over the important work QCH Foundation does to raise much-needed funds for the purchase of lifesaving equipment and technology and to provide world-class care to its patients.

“I never really understood before how much hospitals rely on community support,” said the past senior advisor of marketing and development for SSi Canada.

During a recent tour of QCH, Susan learned more about the Irving Greenberg Family Cancer Centre and the new Barbara Crook and Dan Greenberg Mental Health Centre. They’re both examples of how friends and supporters of QCH can make a life-changing difference.

“The hospital is an integral part of Ottawa’s growing west-end community. We have the opportunity to make it as great as we want. It takes a village.”
