Volunteer Spotlight: Kara Messer’s Journey of Giving Back

Kara is a valued member of the QCH family, and over the past six years, she has supported numerous teams, most recently serving as the Administrative Assistant to the Patient Care department. In addition to her role at the hospital, Kara has been a dedicated volunteer with the QCH Foundation, where she plays an integral part in raising funds and supporting key initiatives that help the hospital provide life-saving care.

Kara’s journey with the Foundation began when she was inspired to give back. “I love working at QCH, and I wanted to find a way to contribute even more,” she says. “My first experience volunteering with the Foundation was for ‘Hopes Rising,’ a campaign to renovate QCH’s Mental Health Centre. It was such a rewarding experience, and it made me realize how much more I could do.”

From there, Kara’s path as a volunteer blossomed. She joined Women In Philanthropy, a group of like-minded women who aim to transform healthcare in west Ottawa and the surrounding communities. Each year, three priority projects are selected for presentation to Women In Philanthropy members. Each member has the opportunity to vote on which project will be funded by the group’s donations. “I remember joining on International Women’s Day. It felt like the perfect fit,” Kara recalls.

Through her involvement with Women In Philanthropy, Kara has seen firsthand the impact of the Foundation’s work. “I’ve been in areas of the hospital that have benefited from the funds we raise,” she shares. “It’s amazing to be part of something that truly makes a difference.”

Kara’s continued dedication to volunteering is driven by the joy she finds in helping others. “I keep volunteering because I love it. It’s such a fulfilling experience,” she says. “It’s a privilege to be a part of the QCH Foundation family and to know that my efforts are helping to provide exceptional care for patients.”

Her story serves as a reminder of the profound difference one person can make. Kara’s willingness to give her time, energy, and expertise has touched countless lives, and her commitment to the QCH Foundation continues to inspire others. If you’ve ever wondered how you can make a difference, consider joining the QCH Foundation as a volunteer. Every contribution counts, and together, we can ensure the best care for every patient.
