Early detection saves lives at Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa
Heather Boyd, a dedicated Clerk in Operating Room Patient Scheduling at Queensway Carleton Hospital, knows firsthand how life-changing early detection can be. Her personal journey has inspired a deep commitment to supporting patients and families every day.
“Finding a lump in my breast at 37 was terrifying,” Heather recalls. “I’m grateful they moved the screening age up to 40, as people are being diagnosed younger.”
“The care I received was comforting and professional,” she adds. “The team were colleagues from the same department, and being supported by familiar faces helped me through a stressful, uncertain time.”
“I am very grateful for the machines, technicians and doctors.”

Today, Heather is a survivor—13 years strong—and a living testament to why early detection matters.
With self-referral mammograms now available across Ontario starting at age 40, more people can take charge of their health—and early detection can truly save lives.
At Queensway Carleton Hospital, our mammography machine is at the heart of early detection. It allows radiologists and technologists to capture detailed images that quickly and accurately identify potential issues. “The technology has advanced, giving a better chance of catching cancer early for a positive outcome,” Heather says.
