Cooking with the Q: Our Dietitians Share a Supersize Feature

March is Nutrition Month in Canada and our QCH dietitians are serving up a supersized Cooking with the Q with tips, tricks, and their best recipes, curated for you!

  • Eat a Rainbow of Colours

Consuming a wide spectrum of colourful fruits and vegetables means you will get a wider variety of vitamins and minerals to keep your immune system strong and your digestive system on track.

Give this Thai Green Curry Soup a try to #EatThe Rainbow.

  • Balance Your Plate

Thanks to Canada’s Food Guide (2019), we have an updated visual of what it means to balance macronutrients for healthy eating.

Fueling your body the right way means you will feel fuller longer and keep your blood sugars balanced to sustain energy levels throughout the day.

  • Try Nature’s Fast Food: Fruit and Vegetables

It’s quick, convenient, and easy to pack and carry. Frozen is just as good fresh. If your grocery haul is currently few and far between, you can rely only on your freezer to provide you with a fast-food snack option that doesn’t spoil.

For a fresh snack, try these Moroccan-Spiced Roasted Carrot as a delicious option.

  • Avoid Drinking Sugar Calories

Drinking sugar won’t give you the type of boost you’re looking for. A quick spike and drop in blood sugar can leave you feeling sluggish and moody. Swap pop for a sugar-free sparkling water. Trade your orange or other fruit juice for water with fresh or frozen fruit.

  • Plan Ahead

Eating well takes time and thought. Identify some meals and recipes ahead of time so you know what to buy at the grocery store. This one, for example, uses only 5 ingredients and a few spices.

Give this Shakshouka a fair shake as part of your meal planning.

  • Eating Out

Eating out doesn’t have to mean eating poorly. Refer back to Canada’s Dietary Guidelines when making choices to ensure your take-out also includes ½ a plate of vegetables, a ¼ serving of a protein source, and a ¼ servings of whole grain foods. This is a great time to support a local restaurant near you!

If you want to try comfort-food classics rolled into one, give this Pizza Spaghetti Casserole a try.
