We’re proud to announce Alan Doak has recently assumed the role of chair of the board of directors for the Queensway Carleton Hospital Foundation. It’s a volunteer leadership position he’s embraced with a deep sense of responsibility, recognizing its importance for stewardship and impact.
“As a resident who lives in Kanata, who does a lot of business in the area and who has a good understanding of the fundraising landscape, I’m really excited,” said Alan, partner of and co-founder of Ottawa-based commercial real estate brokerage Proveras Commercial Realty.
Said the married father of two: “I’m looking forward to working with a great team, and to seeing what we can do to raise awareness, to raise money, and to make sure we continue to have a really great hospital in the west end of Ottawa.”
Alan, who was appointed as chair this past June, will hold the role for the next two years. One of the top priorities of the QCH Foundation board is fundraising, he said. “We’re trying to raise the maximum amount of money possible.”
QCH Foundation is investing in the future of healthcare in our community with a major expansion planned for the hospital. As the largest campaign in our 48-year history, the expansion will help to increase access to care for those living in the west end. QCH serves one of the fastest-growing and aging hospital catchment areas in the country, and regularly operates at or beyond capacity.
Alan said he’s seen what well-funded hospitals look like, from previously living in the United States. “As a juxtaposition, I’ve seen Canadian hospitals,” he said of overcrowded emergency departments, bed shortages and outdated facilities.
Alan has extensive volunteer experience in the community. Most notably, he served for six years on the board of the YMCA of the National Capital Region, both as vice chair and as head of its governance committee. The devoted dad also continues to coach his kids’ hockey and soccer teams.
Alan, who’s been a resident of Ottawa since 2006, is no stranger to QCH. It’s where his children were born, where his mother was cared for after she was diagnosed with cancer and where he seeks treatment for sports-related injuries.
“I’m a weekend warrior,” said the avid mountain biker. “I’ve personally been in and out of QCH more than once.”
Alan first joined the board in 2021, inspired in part by one of his mentors, Fred Seller, founding partner at Brazeau Seller Law. Fred was also our most recent QCH Foundation board chair. “Fred is somebody that I look up to, personally and professionally,” said Alan. “He’s a pillar in the community.”
Alan considers it a great honour to take on a role previously held by Fred, as well as fellow community leaders Ronald Richardson and Karen Sparks.
“There’s an opportunity for me to fill some big shoes and, in the process, to be part of some exciting new initiatives,” said the life sciences graduate of Queen’s University.
“Not only are we building on something truly special but we get to steward the activities of the Foundation through the next phase, which should be one that is transformational for the hospital.
“It’s all extremely positive, and we have so much to be excited about and look forward to.”
