Queensway Carleton Hospital’s (QCH) COVID-19 Vaccine Clinic has been open for over a month. It first opened its doors on March 11 — one year after the first case of COVID-19 in Ottawa.
“Since the clinic has been open, we’ve heard nothing but compliments from the patients,” says Kelly Babcock, Vaccine Clinic Lead. “Everyone involved in this clinic created a good system to get people through as efficiently and safely as possible.”
There was a lot of behind the scenes work to get the clinic ready: it went through five different designs before being finalized. The space transformed from what was formerly a registration area to the vaccine clinic.
Our Pharmacy had to be renovated to make room for the specialized freezer and vaccine preparation room, and that involved a lot of technology, and a lot of staff. The clinic now runs with the help of many, from registration and screening teams, to nurses and physicians.
“I feel very lucky to be working with and getting to know the wonderful group that has been putting together this clinic and I’m hopeful our work will help to curb the severity of COVID-19 in our community,” says, Dr. Dorota Nowodworski, Physician Lead for the vaccine clinic.
The overall goal of the clinic is to help with the full vaccine rollout across Ottawa. QCH’s vaccine strike team, created in tandem with the clinic, has helped with community vaccinations in multiple high-priority long-term care homes and retirement homes.
The vaccine clinic is making plans to move to the provincial portal over the next month, which will further help with the vaccine rollout across the city, Babcock confirms.
Dr. Nowodworski is hopeful for the future:
“I look forward to getting more people in our community and in Ottawa as a whole vaccinated. We’ve been working to get stable inpatients immunized and our clinic numbers continue to grow. As the weather improves, we may even be able to take part of this show into the fresh air!”
